REAP AT $20 Million!!

REAP AT $20 Million!!

March 15, 2013

The Iowa Senate Agriculture & Natural Resources Budget Subcommittee has passed FULL FUNDING for Iowa's REAP Program at $20 million for the upcoming year. This is the first time in the program's history that it has been fully funded.

REAP stands for Resource Enhancement and Protection. It is a program in the State of Iowa that invests in, as its name implies, the enhancement and protection of the state's natural and cultural resources. Iowa is blessed with a diverse array of natural and cultural resources, and REAP is likewise diverse and far reaching. Depending on the individual programs, REAP provides money for projects through state agency budgets or in the form of grants. Several aspects of REAP also encourage private contributions that help accomplish program objectives.

All of the 99 counties in Iowa receive an allocation of the REAP Program. The O’Brien County Conservation Board has utilized the allocation to help in building the Prairie Heritage Center, the purchase of the Hannibal Waterman Wildlife Area, just to name a few of the most recent projects. Also, the O’Brien County Conservation has been awarded several Conservation Education Program grants. The most recent grant awards have been used for the Watchable Wildlife Website, traveling exhibits for the Prairie Heritage Center, and KinderNature – a program that brought conservation education to all of the O’Brien & Osceola County preschoolers. The REAP Program is so much more, but these are just a few of the many things that we can share with you and our county’s visitors through the support of the REAP Program.
